Why the number of years we've lived tells us far less than the depth of what we've lived through.

Strength, Maturity, and Wisdom Don't Come With Age — They Come With Experience

March 30, 20263 min read

Many of us think of wisdom as if it arrives automatically, based on the number of years someone has lived. We speak of "elders," of "with age comes wisdom," as though the calendar itself has something to teach us.

But it's my belief — and perhaps you agree — that:

"Strength, maturity, and wisdom don't come with age — they come with experience."

If you think about the people who've left the deepest impressions on your life, were they always the oldest in the room? Not always. And sometimes the oldest person in the room was still waiting for their wisdom to arrive.

Growing older is automatic. Growing wiser is a choice.

"You can be a young person who's been through a lot, and those experiences have made you wiser and stronger. You can also be an older person whose life was sheltered, leaving you unexposed to challenges — which means your resilience and wisdom muscles may not be as strong."

Neither path is a judgment. Life provides each of us a different set of circumstances. But it is a reminder that wisdom requires effort and intention — with the world, with difficulty, and with ourselves.

Understanding the small things

We often associate maturity with big gestures. But I think real maturity is quieter and deeper than that.

"Maturity is not when we start speaking big things, but when we start understanding small things."

It's when we stop needing to win the argument and start being curious about the other person's point of view. It is in knowing when to speak and when to listen. In noticing a kind heart. In recognising a good deed for what it is — and being moved by it.

The more we experience, the more we learn — hopefully — and the wiser and stronger we become: emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. But there is a second gift that comes with this, one that's easy to overlook.

It becomes easier to appreciate what is right in front of us.

We grow through what we go through

None of the experiences that have shaped us — the losses, the mistakes, the wrong turns, the unexpected joys — were wasted. Each one was teaching us something, even when it didn't feel that way.

"Admitting our mistakes is a sign of maturity and wisdom. Without them, we wouldn't grow into who we're meant to become."

This is not toxic positivity — saying that everything happens for a reason. It is something more profound: the acknowledgement that we are shaped by all the experiences we have lived through.

"We don't just go through life — we grow through it. Everything we've lived has shaped the strength and wisdom we carry now."

So the question worth asking, no matter where we are in life, is not how many years have we lived? but how fully have we experienced and lived them?
