5 Simple Ways to Control Strong Emotions

5 Simple Ways to Control Strong Emotions

August 20, 20262 min read

What triggers us controls us.

We've all had that moment — out of nowhere, our chest tightens, our thoughts speed up, and suddenly we're somewhere we didn't choose to go. That's a strong emotion arriving.

Strong emotions don't wait for a convenient moment. Anger, overwhelm, jealousy, grief — they all arrive the same way: fast, loud, and demanding a reaction right now. But every one of them is trying to tell us something, not trip us up.

Take anger, for example. It's not the problem it's made out to be — it's a signal. When our chest tightens or our voice sharpens, our body is waving a flag, telling us something needs our attention.

Here are five things to do once a strong emotion hits:

1️⃣ Delay is your friend. The physical spike of a strong emotion — the racing heart, the heat in your chest — usually only lasts 60 to 90 seconds. Delay for as long as you can, breathe through it, and let that peak pass first.

2️⃣ Name what you're feeling. Not "I'm fine" — the real word. Angry, hurt, scared, jealous. What you name, you tame.

3️⃣ Ask what's really going on. A boundary that got crossed that should have been respected? Or is it a fear in disguise — of being abandoned, lonely, unsupported, or ignored?

4️⃣ Choose your response. Reacting gives your power to whatever set you off. Responding keeps it in your hands.

5️⃣ Check in with yourself afterward. Once things settle, ask what the moment taught you — gently, the way you would with someone you love.

Anybody can find themselves in a situation when we feel angry — and that's okay. Anger is not a bad emotion.

Same as any other emotion. It's our body's signal that something needs our attention. Pause. Listen to it. Then choose how to respond.

So next time a strong emotion rises in you, whatever it is, treat yourself the way you'd treat someone you love in that moment — with patience and compassion. You deserve that too.
